The present study aims at exploring the effect of enhancing English as a foreign language students’ self-esteem on their spoken production skills. This work is mainly concerned with determining first year students’ psychological and linguistic classroom behaviors and the obstacles that lessen their engagement in English as a foreign language oral classroom at the University of Badji Mokhtar- Annaba. It also attempts to shed light on the role of self-esteem enhancement programs in ameliorating both students’ self-esteem and their oral production. The present research also offers a set of useful pedagogical implications.

This article is a translation, into Arabic, of the first part of the first chapter of Histoire de ma Vie, an autobiography by Fadhma Aït Mansour Amrouche, published in 1968 by François Maspéro, Paris. It is preceded by a letter written by Fadhma to her son Jean, where she asked him to publish her autobiography. Then, the author of this article stated an adapted version of the epilog of the book, where Fadhma asked her daughter Taos to work on the publication of the manuscript. Finally comes the translation of the first part “My Mother” of the first chapter « The path to School ».

La terminologie, science liée à d’autres disciplines des sciences du langage, revêt, de nos jours une importance majeure dans la formation de terminographe-traducteur. Au cours de cette formation, l’apprenant rencontre plusieurs difficultés émanant de l’enseignement de la terminologie bilingue. À partir de l’analyse de ces problèmes, nous tenterons, dans la présente recherche, de proposer des procédés méthodologiques inspirés de notre expérience professionnelle, afin de garantir une meilleure transmission du contenu de ce cours. Enfin, des recommandations seront formulées pour tenter d’améliorer le processus d’enseignement-apprentissage de la terminologie bilingue.

The phenomenon of retranslation is as old as the phenomenon of translation itself. However, research on retranslation has only started to attract scholarly attention recently. It is well clear that various literary works are being translated and retranslated all the time. However, the real motives and reasons behind that are still relatively unexplored. One prevalent answer to that is encapsulated in the work of Antoine Berman (1990), who claims that first translations are domesticated, lacking, and are marked with what he called =inherent failure‘, while subsequent retranslations are foreignized, accurate, and close to the original. The dynamic move from deficient first translations to great accomplished retranslations has been consolidated into what is now called in Translation Studies as the Retranslation Hypothesis (RH), mainly the underlying assumption that first translations of a given source text (ST) are domesticated while later retranslations are foreignized. Despite the recent scholarly interest in retranslations and the RH, this phenomenon has only been investigated by a handful of researchers. Therefore, conducting further in-depth studies on retranslations and testing and assessing the validity of the RH in empirical and systematic settings is, hence, of the utmost importance. These studies will greatly help gain better understanding of the dynamics of the complex phenomenon of retranslation and unravel the very nature of this unique and significant intercultural activity.

The competency-based approach is one of the most adopted teaching methodologies around the world, including Algeria which applied the BMD system as a step to revise curricula and give more importance to the learner’s competence. The competency-based approach was differently adopted in the different disciplines. The departments of languages in Algeria were among the first to adopt this approach by integrating the LMD system, while the departments of Translation has adopted it ten years later, by opening Master and Doctorate programs. The main problem is not who first adopted it, as much as how we can adapt effectively with the changes in the teaching methodologies and fulfil the purposes intended from them. This research paper is subscribed under a research group working on ‘Developing translation competence, an empirical study and modern approaches, university of Algiers2. We aim to highlight the importance of the competency-based approach in Translation, mainly by developing translation competence. We attempt also to raise the teachers’ awareness of and adaptation with the adopted approaches by the teaching organisms in Algeria in order to attain the expected aims from the learning process.

It goes without saying that one significant aspect of intercultural communication which often escapes one?s notice is negotiation. Alongside with its important geopolitical location, Tanger has always been, since a long time, a considerable site for such intercultural negotiation. That Tanger has witnessed and received different cultural elements makes of it a preferable subject-matter for many travelers, story-tellers, anthopoligists and researchers of different cultural background. So, its geographical position has transformed it into a particular contact zone wherein interesting intercultural activities have taken place, the most important of which is intercultural translation. However, an emerging global cultural economy has opened an attention-grabbing room for reflection about how intercultural translation is shaped and shapes globalization. In this vein, this paper seeks to unveil the poetics and politics of intercultural translation within the global age, with a particular emphasis on American Translations of Moroccan Culture of Tanger during the 1950?s through 1970?s.

It is impossible to imagine our lives without screens of television, cinema or smart phones in particular, wherever we go, we are followed by its bright colours, resonant voices and fabricated sentences in such a way that attracted the attention of everyone who watched them in its home country or in other countries, and therefore their producers had to translate them into different languages of the world to reach the largest number of recipients and achieve additional profits, as a result of the existence of different languages, audiovisual translation has emerged as an urgent need to enjoy foreign audiovisual productions; the translator stood speechless in front of these audiovisual discourses that consist of several elements ranging from iconography and language, written and oral. These characteristics would complicate his work and oblige him to study them in-depth to be able to transfer their semantic, cultural and social dimensions as it is from the original language to the target language. Among the most important concepts that are closely related to audio-visual translation is the concept of several audiovisual codes, the concept of prefabricated orality, the concept of multimodality, the concept of constrained translation and the concept of synchronization.

This contribution will examine, with concrete examples, the phenomenon of "plagiarism" in legal translation in Algeria. But why can we speak of "plagiarism" in the translation of Algerian legal texts - Legislative in particular? And in what form does it manifest? Indeed, the "plagiarism" in legal translation is presented on two levels: conceptual and linguistic. Conceptually, we note the loan of several legal concepts to French legislation. In linguistic terms, plagiarism essentially reveals in stylistic loan and in servile translation. Thus, plagiarism does not only occur in the misappropriation of ideas or works assigned to other people, it is everywhere and has several figures.

Modern technology has provided a great asset for humanity as it has provided many tools for the improvement of the process of teaching and communication, especially in the field of translation. Indeed, it may be difficult for some to find a translator to transfer what is difficult to translate into the target language and, thus, they have to deal with translation sites for a quick and useful translation. However, if this is easy, to some extent, between English and French, for example, it poses great problems between a language such as Arabic and foreign languages. What are the problems that the Arabic language faces? How to solve them? We will try, through this paper, to reach some answers that may improve translation into and from Arabic.

The aim of this study is to investigate the appropriateness of the different translation procedures used in rendering the various semantic as well as stylistic meanings of "exception" words and style in the Holy Quran. This aim was achieved through deciding, first, on the different meanings of exception in both Arabic and English languages. Then, some Quranic examples of each type of meaning were chosen, and their various translations were compared and contrasted with the original in order to decide on the appropriateness of each of the translation procedures used in rendering each type of meaning, whether semantic or stylistic. This resulted in deducing a list of translation procedures, put in an order of preference, according to the extent of the appropriateness of each of them. Some untranslatable meanings were also spotted, and compensation strategies were suggested. It is hoped that the study would be useful to translation practitioners as well as theorists by contributing a block to the field of translation studies. Above all, it is hoped that the study would be useful in correcting the translations of the holy Quran.

New discipline, as Mona Baker points out, has Rgrown at a phenomenal speedr since the1970s and 1980s. Introductions to translation studies point to a number of signs of its vitality, including the growing quantity of specialist journals, the establishment of centres for translation studies, and the founding of new series devoted to translation.

Polysemy, in contrast to monosemy (a word having one meaning), can be defined as a linguistic unit changing its meaning following context. Ancient Arab linguists studied this phenomenon in the Holy Qurran and called it RAl-Ishtirak Allafdhir or RAl-Mushtarak Allafdhi". In Arabic, polysemy may be prepositional, verbal or nominal. This paper will discuss the various meanings of two words RUmmar and RDeanr as used in Qurran and show how they can be translated Into English.

One of the legacies of translation is faithfulness in meaning transfer. The word is supposed to be expressive, easy to comprehend and holds the denotative meaning of the original. That is, it must restrict itself to the nature of register and categorization. The literariness of language is not permissible in the world economy. The latter is in an ongoing development and transformation, and so is the register of its language. The problem, such development causes, is the normalization of the word to the original. Economic text necessitates a special skill in translation that cannot be done without a thorough knowledge in the field of economy. In this world of globalization, no error is permissible. Translators must be professional: they are constrained to learn, besides translation curricula, the major legacies of the specialized field of their choice, as the case here, economy. So, to indulge in the translation industry, the translator must have two major pre-requisites: the mastering of mechanisms of translation, and a fair substantial knowledge in the domain of economy. That is, his academic qualifications are the cornerstone of professionalism. Thus, training and certification are recommended for translators.

However, the interpretive process meets obstacles when translating some specialized texts such as the Quranic text, and the technical text. In fact, the Quranic text contains some specific words called Gharib al-Quaran which hinder the interpretive process at its understanding stage. The technical text also contains some specific words called technical terms which hinder the interpretive process at its re-expressing stage. A semantic contextual study could be undergone on Gharib words in the Quranic text, so as to understand their meanings. Neology or dictionary research could be realized on technical words, so as to be able to re-express their meanings in the target language. These obstacles seem then to be lexical.

Linguistic and translation publications face multifarious problems in meaning relevance due to the lack of substantial dictionaries of the field. Besides, there is no real term equivalence in Arabic for meaning transfer. This fact causes different difficulties in finding the right meaningful term in Arabic.

This paper tries to explore third year students? attitudes towards writing a composition in English as a foreign language to give insights into how they feel, think and behave vis-a-vis writing; and more importantly, to show the relationship between these attitudes and learners? level of achievement in this skill. To test my hypotheses, a questionnaire was administered to 3rd year students along with a short interview with the writing teacher of the investigated group. In addition to that, a quantitative analysis was undertaken. The paper demonstrates that students have a negative attitude towards writing a composition in English, and this has a negative effect on their level of achievement.

Terminology, which is a science related to other fields of Language Sciences, is nowadays of a major importance in shaping students to become future terminographers-translators. During their studies, the learners face several issues resulting from the teaching of bilingual terminology. From the analysis of these issues, we will attempt, in this research, to suggest some methodological processes based on our professional experience, in order to insure a better transmission of the lecturers content. Finally, we will make some recommendations in order to try to improve the teaching-learning process of bilingual terminology.

Arabic terminology relative to translation studies is suffering from a considerable accumulation of terms and an evident terminological dispersion. The terminology of translation studies is characterized by plurality, polysemy, and a big anarchy in its shift from French to Arabic. This article shed light on the terminological plurality of Arabic translation studies. It also points out the difficulties that translation studies of Arabic terminology encounter in its shift from French to Arabic.

Translators consider judicial text as pragmatic. Its performative value in translation relies on both meaning and judicial effect. Since this performativity is only effective in particular territory and a given judicial system, how can it be translated when these two referential elements change? Judicial translation difficulty resides in the integration of culture and institutional history within judicial concept. Besides, the technicality of this Specific Languager, which has proper style and terminology and may borrow from other registers, constitutes another difficulty for the translator.

The aim of this practical study is to shed the light on the translation procedures employed by André Du Ryer Sieur de Malzaire, the first translator of the Quran into French in 1647, by confronting some Quranic verses with the target text, and determine the motives, finalities and ideological aspects of his translation, through the analysis of the paratextual elements.
